The southwest facing slopes of the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux furnish the complex soil-structure and the climatic conditions that are necessary prerequisites to the production of great wine. The Château du Juge, established in 1880, is on the first gentle slopes of the right bank of the Garonne valley, some 20 miles south-east of Bordeaux.
